The Stupid Statements People Make About Hair Loss...and What to Do About It

The Stupid Statements People Make About Hair Loss…and What to Do About It

Just the other day, a friend of mine (who is confined to a wheelchair) was talking to his friends. They were talking about the average height of athletes. One of my friend’s companions looked down at him mid sentence and asked, “Well, how tall did you used to be?”

We all know someone whose mouth seems to run away without their brains. And if you have thinning hair, you’ve certainly heard your fair share of stupid remarks. Some comments may be hurtful or cause you to be angry. But then again, with the right sense of humor, you can listen (or read) some of these comments and learn to find some humor in it. Or…you could be the one to let a clueless friend or acquaintance know their comments were not appreciated.

We’ll give you some ideas in a minute. But first, here are some of the ridiculous comments women with thinning hair have either heard from others or read:

  • “At least your hair dries faster.”
  • “What is the big deal? You’re way too preoccupied with your hair.”
  • “My hair is so thick, I have to get it thinned.”
  • “You’re so lucky you don’t have to worry about what your hair looks like.”

And here is one of my favorites from Wikipedia: The general public has become accepting of the shaved head as well, but female baldness is less socially acceptable.

You think?!

Until people become a little more sensitive to those around them, those of us with thinning hair are likely to hear comments that shock the heck out of us. So what do you do about it?

Ignore it. Remember that hair does not determine who you are. That’s tough because so many women tie their femininity and self confidence to their appearance. If you are struggling with self-esteem issues, you may want to talk to a therapist. Seriously. Waking up every morning when you don’t feel like yourself puts a real strain on your stress levels and your ability to cope with unpleasant situations.

Make a joke. Silly people often realize they’ve said something stupid once it comes out of their mouth. If you can joke about your thinning hair rather than get offended, you and the person you are with can quickly resettle into a comfortable environment.

Tell them it offends you. Some people are oblivious to the challenges those of us with thinning hair experience. Others are genuinely mean. If you speak up, most of the people you associate with will quickly apologize. And maybe they will think before spouting off again to you or to someone else. If they don’t apologize, it’s probably not worth your time to think about or speak to that person again.

I always find great information online about hair and hair loss. Some of the most recent articles I’ve read make it seem that to some extent, we all suffer from some level of hair trauma. If you can use these tactics to get past the stupid remarks, good for you. If you can’t, then it’s time to seek out new solutions. Like Volluma.

Good luck in coping with silly people! If you’ve  heard any particularly ridiculous comments, we’d like to know about them. Please take a minute and post a comment with your stories.
